As we approach the holiday of Chanukah, we are proud to announce a creative, educational program, the Olive Oil Press Workshop. This unique and exciting program is sure to add a new dimension of appreciation and meaning to your student’s Chanukah experience.

The Program:

As a group of Macabees, students will refine the olive oil needed for the Temple Menorah while they:

· Pit fresh olives, squeeze them with a hand press.

· Strain and then spin the extract in a centrifuge to separate the pure oil.

· Fashion a wick out of cotton for use with the oil when lighting the Menorah.

Students sort and hand-press fresh olives in an old fashioned olive press made of wood and cast iron, then decant the olive juice with a modern centrifuge to quickly extract the pure olive oil - authentic "Shemen Zayit. As the olive oil is refined, the students hand spin wicks out of cotton and then light the Chanukah Menorah with the resulting oil. Concepts like the reason for using olive oil in modern day Chanukiyot and the proper lighting of the Chanukah Menorah is discussed and demonstrated. Children also get to act in a short Chanukah skit to add excitement to the program.

The program can accommodate up to 50 children per session and runs for 45 min.
